Shampoo bars vs vloeibare shampoo: wat is beter voor je haar?

Shampoo bar or liquid shampoo, which is actually better? A shampoo bar isn't automatically better for everyone, but it often wins on environmental impact, price per wash and gentler ingredients. Liquid shampoo, on the other hand, can feel more familiar to use for some hair types. So the answer depends on what matters most to you.

What is the difference between a shampoo bar and liquid shampoo?

A shampoo bar is a solid, concentrated shampoo with no added water. Liquid shampoo is largely made up of water and comes in a plastic bottle. Both clean your hair in the same way: they remove dirt, sebum and product residue from your scalp and lengths.

So the real difference isn't in how they work, but in the composition, the packaging and how you use the product.

Shampoo bars vs liquid shampoo: the comparison

To make the choice easier, we've put the most important differences side by side. Below you can read how a shampoo bar and a liquid shampoo score on each point.

Shampoo bar Liquid shampoo
Ingredients and composition Concentrated, often free from sulphates and silicones Diluted with water, more often sulphates and fillers
Environment and packaging Plastic-free, less transport weight Plastic bottle, higher transport weight because of the water
Price and lifespan Replaces 2 to 3 bottles on average Runs out faster, more frequent reordering
Ease of use Takes some getting used to, building lather in your hand Instant lather from the bottle, familiar to use
Suitable for travel Compact and leak-free, no liquid restrictions Liquid, subject to hand luggage rules
Adjustment period Hair can feel different for the first few washes No switch needed

The biggest differences therefore lie in composition, environmental impact and ease of use. We'll explain those three points in more detail below.

1. Ingredients and composition

Many shampoo bars are free from sulphates, silicones and parabens, and need no fillers or water to work. Liquid shampoos more often contain these ingredients, among other things to keep the product liquid and shelf-stable.

This does vary from product to product. The form of a shampoo doesn't tell you everything: so always check the ingredients list rather than trusting "bar" or "bottle" as a quality mark.

2. Environment, price and lifespan

A shampoo bar is plastic-free and concentrated. As a result, one bar replaces 2 to 3 bottles of liquid shampoo on average, which makes it better value per wash in the long run.

During transport, too, a bar weighs less than a bottle full of water, which lowers the environmental impact even further.

3. Ease of use and adjustment

To be honest: a shampoo bar takes a little getting used to. You build up lather in your hands or rub the bar directly over your scalp, instead of pumping foam out of a bottle. Some people find their hair goes through a slight adjustment period during the first few washes.

On the plus side, a bar is compact, can't leak and is therefore ideal for travelling.

When should you choose a shampoo bar?

A shampoo bar is the logical choice if you want to wash plastic-free and more gently, travel often or consciously want to use less packaging. Liquid shampoo may feel nicer for now if you'd rather not have an adjustment period or aren't ready to switch yet.

At WONDR you'll find solid shampoo bars in recognisable scents, for different hair types and needs.

Switching from liquid shampoo to a shampoo bar

Good news: switching is simple if you follow these steps.

  1. Choose a bar that suits your hair type. Look for ingredients that suit dry, oily or sensitive hair.
  2. Build up lather in wet hands. Rub the bar between your hands or directly over your wet scalp.
  3. Massage in gently. Work the lather through your scalp and lengths with your fingertips.
  4. Rinse well. Finish with a conditioner bar for extra softness.

Give yourself a few washes to get used to it, that's part of the switch. Let the bar dry well between uses on a draining soap dish, that way it lasts the longest.

FAQ
